Levels & Feature Details
There are two educational product "levels", with different feature sets. The free student level is designed to give ALL students in the USA/Canada free access to VisualAnalysis, the school level provides more features. See detailed features and level comparison.
Modeling
The software offers basic frame and finite element analysis with members, plates, spring supports, static 1st order and P-Delta analysis, dynamic mode shape and response and time-history are also available. Structural models may be pure-trusses, mixed truss-frames in 2D or 3D. Models may be sketched graphically or generated through a variety of mechanisms.
Loading
A wide variety of static loading is available including distributed or concentrated forces and moments, settlements, and thermal loading. Dynamic loads and mass may also be specified. Load combinations are flexible and support major building code requirements.
Analysis & Results
Analysis results include displacements, reactions, member internal forces and end reactions, plate forces and stresses. Results are available graphically on-frame, or in member or plate graphs, as well as in tabled reports that are filterable and flexible to create. Project files may be saved and sent between students and teachers with ease. (Files saved without analysis results are fairly small.)
Design Checks
To introduce students to code-checking features of the commercial product, the educational version has AISC 2005 steel design "unity" checks for beams, columns, braces, etc.
The current academic version of VisualAnalysis is 7.0 and runs on just about any Windows machine (XP, Vista, or 7; 32-bit or 64-bit). There are few machine requirements, but the product takes about 25MB to install on your hard-drive. An updated video-card driver, with 256MB RAM and OpenGL 2.0 is recommended, but not required. The more high-powered your machine, the larger problems you can solve (in reasonable time).
Problem. After installing VisualAnalysis Edu 7, it fails to run at all.
Solution. Please try installing "as an administrator" (right-click on the setup program and choose "Run As" to enter admin login credentials.
Problem. After installing as an administrator, VisualAnalysis Edu 7 still fails to run, now what?
Solution. Please download and run this Microsoft C++ Run-Time setup.
Problem. VisualAnalysis Edu 7 asks for a license key every time I run it, why?
Solution. Your machine is "locked down". Run VisualAnalysis Edu 7 "as an administrator" once to enter the license key. Right-click on the icon or menu used to launch VisualAnalysis Edu 7 and choose "Run As" to enter admin login credentials. After that you may run VisualAnalysis normally.
Problem. When I run VisualAnalysis Edu 7 it puts "Student" at the top of the report, how can I enter my name at the top of the report?
Solution. Use the Modify tab in Project Manager under the Design Criteria settings to use your name for the Title, in the Miscellaneous section. This will appear in your reports.
